Where & when will we shoot?
Lifestyle newborn & family photography sessions take place in your own home, preferably in the nursery or mum & dad’s bedroom mainly but we can move around the house as you need to. Don’t worry at all about your house being a mess – you just had a baby! Keep the house nice & warm for baby to keep them happy and content. All you need to do is make the bed with plain bedding (preferably white) and open the curtains – the beauty of lifestyle photography is in the close up details and the main focus is on you as a family so by it’s nature the shots are about the people not the surroundings.
You ideally want baby to be as young as possible so I recommend you book in your session for some point in the first 2-3 weeks. This tends to coincide well with daddy being off on paternity leave.
How can I prepare baby for the shoot?
Newborns are unpredictable and this shoot is all about them. Please do not worry about your baby crying
or needing to eat during the shoot—newborn sessions are purposely longer than standard sessions to allow for plenty of breaks, feedings and nappy/outfit changes.
What should we wear?
This is an exciting time in your life and we want to capture all of that…so take care of yourself first and make sure you feel comfortable! As far as clothing goes, keep it simple. Throw in a little colour if you’d like, but skip busy patterns and I think neutral colours tend to work best. For your partner, the same rules apply. Solid or subtle patterned tops work best. Try to stay away from prominent logos or writing on clothing.
Do you use props or posed newborn poses?
The style of newborn photography that I favour is lifestyle sessions. Rather than un-natural, posed newborn shots, I love to capture the relationship between the new baby and his/her parents and siblings. This doesn’t mean that I won’t take individual photographs of the baby and capture some great detail shots of his/her little toes and fingers. I am happy to incorporate any ideas you might have! Feel free to incorporate any special family heirlooms or baby blankets that you would like to use in the photos.
What can I do to prepare for the session?
Mums tend to stress out because this is a new experience and because they want things to be “perfect.” I will take your baby’s lead and allow him/her to be the focus of the shoot. If your baby cries, or poops, it’s okay. I promise! Just focus on relaxing and cuddling with your sweet new addition and I will create images that you will cherish forever!
One of the great things about being at home is siblings can get involved too! Precious moments between a baby and their new big brother or sister are some of my favourites so we’ll be sure to include them. I do ask that other family members don’t visit during our session, we want you and your little family to be comfortable and relaxed and having a house full of visitors waiting to hold baby won’t get those lovely intimate moments we’re aiming to capture. If there are other family members you’d like to be there such as grandparents just let me know and we can schedule the session around their visit so they can arrive towards the end, this way your shoot isn’t interrupted and we can include them toward the end. I am happy to accommodate extra shot requests to include other family members but my priority always is you & your new baby.
I offer maternity sessions in the last few months of your pregnancy which I recommend as not only do you get images from that special time but we also get to meet beforehand so when you see me next for your newborn shoot we already have had a relationship and hopefully you already feel comfortable with me taking pictures of you and this reflects on camera.
Contact me to book in your maternity or newborn session using the contact form on the website. I recommend you book this in as soon as you can in your pregnancy as the diary fills quickly for these lifestyle sessions as I only take on 2 per month.
